Marginal Waters

Gays of the '80s by Doug Ischar.

Marginal Waters

Ischar's body of photographs from 1985, never before seen in its entirety, were taken on the now defunct Belmont Rocks in the city of Chicago, one of the most visible urban gay beaches in North America during the height of the AIDS crisis. Ischar has described this work as a response to what was then accepted as “gay photography,” a practice confined to studio settings –void of social context – in which buff bodies were frozen for the private pleasure of male viewers.
